Dr. Nick Gottardo Discusses Recent Advances in Research of DIPG and the Success of the DIPG/DMG Symposium

Dr. Nick Gottardo, Head of Pediatric Oncology Hematology, Perth Children's Hospital and Co-Lead of Brain Tumor Research at the Telethon Kids Institute. The Cure Starts Now Medical Advisory Council Member

“We now know the disease much better, we understand it much better. And if you understand something then you can exploit vulnerabilities in it.”

About the DIPG | DMG Symposium

“The meeting that occurs every two years is a meeting that brings all the best minds working in DIPG regardless of where they come from. They come from Europe, America, Asia, Australia, wherever. And the emphasis being on freely sharing ideas and research and establishing new collaborations and strengthening old collaboration.

Like the DIPG Registry for example. We're learning so much and you know it was an idea, and it was able to be pulled off because of the DIPG Collaborative [and The Cure Starts Now] putting the support behind it.

The other innovative thing which is very unusual to most of the meetings that I attend is that there are parents and families in the room with the scientists and the clinicians listening to the science. I actually think that is actually a very smart strategy because everybody's in the room and people are coming up for the problem from different aspects.

Hearing some of the powerful stories and the journeys that some of the families have gone through I think it doubly inspires already very dedicated people on this mission to find the cure for this disease.”
