The Cure Starts Now breaks records raising over $273,000 in online telethon
Cincinnati, OH | December 3, 2019 — Cincinnati-based and founded charity, The Cure Starts Now Foundation, held its second annual Giving Tuesday online telethon on Tuesday, December 3rd. Initiated by the 44 chapters of The Cure Starts Now in 3 countries, 2019 also hosted about 60 local participants at its Cincinnati based headquarters as part of its “100 Families Strong” event. In total over 154 families and their children fighting brain cancer participated either virtually or in person at the Cure Starts Now headquarters for the historic event.
“Last year our 100 Family Strong event raised $219,000 in just 8 hours,” says co-founder Brooke Desserich. “This year with about another 51 families joining the effort and many doing so locally, we expect the event to surpass expectations.”
An unprecedented event, The Cure Starts Now raised over $273,000 for vital research in “homerun” cancers that will lead to a cure for all cancers. Experts believe that DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) and DMG (diffuse midline glioma) are part of this strategy because they require innovative strategies beyond current methods, they are believed to have started at early development and they represent some of the most difficult cancers to treat.
Brooke and Keith Desserich founded The Cure Starts Now Foundation in 2007 after losing their daughter Elena Desserich to DIPG, a rare form of pediatric brain cancer. Since then they’ve funded over $13 million in new innovative research worldwide through 90+ research projects. And today, the local Cincinnati charity has grown to 44 locations bringing unparalleled awareness to DIPG and its homerun implications for all cancers. Even in 12 short years, the research developed by the charity has identified unique triggers to all cancer growth, pioneered new methods of surgery and led to the creation of the world’s first “virtual cancer hospital.”
