Penny Wars Benefit The Cure Starts Now

During the end of the 2014 school year, students at Fred Becker Elementary School in Waterloo, IA wanted to do something to help kids with cancer. A group of third graders brainstormed a great way to get the rest of the school involved. After much discussion the "Penny War" began.
The students challenged each hallway to come up with pennies to benefit The Cure Starts Now Foundation. The hallway with the most pennies enjoyed ice cream as a treat. The group of 5 third graders planned the whole fundraiser. They organized the materials, made posters to advertise and promote, collected the pennies each day, and sparked the passion not only in the students, but their families and the community as well. The girls gave up their recess for about 3 weeks to do all of the planning and executing.

After the fundraiser was over, one of the girls came up to the Mrs. Sunni Hart, the service project coordinator, and said, "Mrs. Hart, what are we going to do now?"
"Well, you are going to go back to being regular 3rd graders", Hart said.
The student replied, "Oh, I don't want to do that!"

In the end this group of dedicated students raised $1,579 for pediatric brain cancer research and were excited to benefit The Cure Starts Now and the families it supports.
