Children Battling Cancer to Dance with Ballerinas

The Cure Starts Now, along with the Cincinnati Ballet, will be hosting a “Ballerina for a Day” event this Sunday, October 6 from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, for children affected by pediatric cancer. This unique event will give children the chance to get out and have a fun-filled day at the ballet. These children are invited to bring along their families for the day.

The children will see a Swan Lake preview piece, a performance by Principal Dancer, Sarah Hairston, and they will even take a ballet class taught by Hairston and other dancers. Throughout the day, children will head to different stations, including a craft station where they will create tutus, bead bracelets and other crafts, a station to get their make-up done by Sephora make-up artists, as well as a station to learn about costumes. Once they are all glammed up, the children will have the chance to have their photo taken with a Cincinnati Ballet dancer in costume.

The Cincinnati Ballet has been involved with The Cure Starts since Carla and Mike Eng purchased the Nutcracker wish at The Cure Starts Now’s “Once in a Lifetime Gala” . The wish was given to an oncology patient at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Since then, Cincinnati Ballet has made it a tradition to invite all oncology patients to become a ballerina for a day. This is the second year for the event, with a new theme each year. The creation of the event was inspired by the Cincinnati Ballet’s will to do something more to help children battling cancer.
Started in 2007, in tribute to 6-year-old Elena Desserich and her battle with brain cancer, The Cure Starts Now Foundation is one of the only cancer foundations dedicated to a “homerun” cure for all cancers.
