Keegan was happily riding his bike with his friends in our neighborhood one day. The following day he complained of dizziness and a headache. I took him to our pediatrician the following day and they sent us to the children’s hospital in Atlanta for an MRI. He was admitted to the hospital that night and by the next day, he couldn’t walk. A team of doctors told us that day that he had DIPG and had six months to two years to live. We were told to go home and make memories. He was nine years old. He fought bravely for 14 months. Keegan was always the life of the party. He was so quick-witted and hilarious. He loved to get the nurses and doctors cracking up laughing every time we went to the hospital for treatment. He loved playing soccer, going down to the creek to look for tadpoles with his friends, riding his bike, playing with Legos, doing fun stuff with his little brother Brady, and aliens. When he could no longer do most of these things, he wrote a series of comic books. He invented the main character, Captain Cheese and his nemesis, Mr. Mean Midget. His Uncle Shane had his company print a large batch of the first volume of his comic book, Captain Cheese, and Keegan got to see it published and sold locally in our town and at the hospital. He was so proud of this accomplishment, and it helped keep his mind off his treatments. He gained his angel wings on January 5th, 2003, just 2 months before his 11th birthday.
